The Loneliness Solution

This is an interesting read. The first thing I noted was loneliness in relation to social media because that is how the book starts…loneliness because of how things are due to the online world. Whether your online and in-person experiences are similar or different to those shared in the book, this topic is definitely one to consider and we must rethink what it means to be in true community.

Lonely. Engulfed & submerged under a turbulent and volatile culture. Author Jack Eason’s humor & life experience, reveal principles which harness the power of community to banish the loneliness killing your spirit. Memorable stories packed with straightforward solutions. Be encouraged by real friendship & community. Breathe connection back into your life!

I share a bit more of my heart and thoughts on this issue a little more down below because I think the book only looks at one side of the topic, but I wanted to start with sharing what the book addresses. It highlights the problem of loneliness as well as the loneliness solution. I love that the author brings to light what has been happening in our current times but not just leave it at that. He shares many ways for us to work together to battle loneliness. You can read more about this in the book. I know the book addresses more than the social media aspects of loneliness and many great points are brought up but I’d love to challenge us all to think about how we can create a solution to loneliness without directing the blame on one thing.

To be honest, I don’t agree with some of what the book shares and highlights about the online space. It may be because my experiences have been more positive than not. I won’t deny that there are lots of bad things about the online space and that the main intent of a lot of online people is to create addictions and also people are just mean. But I know stories and stories of people who have gained so much for the online communities, even ones where they were able to bring what they learned or encouraged by from the online friendships and have that multiplied in their in-person own communities. And because the news likes to bring up shocking stories, they usually come in form of bad or evil things happen online.

I know my own personal friendships have been amplified by ways to connect through social media because of how we can connect from one visit to the next. I think this one-sided thinking about the online space also does a disservice to those in our community who seem to be engaged and ARE engaged in many different ways BUT are lonely. This brings light to many mental health and social issues that have already been in place before the invention and wide use of the Internet. All things we can discuss and think about more.
