Sacred Holidays

The holidays can bring up all kinds of emotions. It can be the whole range of all the feels from joy to grieve or from anticipation to disappointment. There seem to be so many unspoken rules and expectations when it comes to holidays through traditions passed down through the generations and a flurry of activities.

Holidays are meant to be more than chaos with glimpses of grace – they are meant to draw us closer to God and one another, but often life is so busy that setting up a game plan just doesn’t happen.

Most holidays are meant for celebration but when it comes down to it, more often than not, we are feeling like the standards are too high. Whose standards? I’m not sure but they’re there. In her new book, Sacred Holidays, Becky Kiser has insights, tips, and tools to gently guide us through these holidays so that we are able to have more joy-filled memories.

This book is written as somewhat of a handbook to keep out through the year. You don’t have to read it all at once…it’s actually not recommended to read it all at once because that’s part of the reason why we feel so overwhelmed when it comes to the holidays. They kind of all get mashed up with life and then into one another as we don’t take a pause to celebrate each one. I already feel a sense of relief reading the first section because Becky gives us permission to see holidays in a different light. I love how she talks about the word “sacred” and the focus being on “holy” and “set apart.” I think even those who aren’t necessarily religious will find great nuggets for how we can better celebrate these amazing moments through the year without pressure and guilt.

Your turn: What are some of your emotions about holidays and all the things that come with them?
