The Great Declutter of March 2019

Be forewarned: I’m wordy. This post is written by me. This post is wordy.

January + February

In January, I set out to host my usual annual month-long decluttering group. In order for me to make the group beneficial to the members, I had to limit the number. There was a waitlist.

From my experience, decluttering has allowed me to be more and do more for those around me, so I wanted to make sure those who weren’t able to join in January got a chance to get in on the decluttering action. I’m hosting another group this month BUT there is still a waitlist.

March

I’ve decided to offer 2 challenge groups in March. Because I have a lot of free time? Nope, definitely not that! BUT what I do want is for people to get free from the stuff that holds them down. Little by little, we gave all the items in our house permission to take up space in our home and in our heads. It will not be an overnight transformation and there is no magic to it. It will take some work.

Since the phenomenon of a certain Netflix show, people have asked if I would start a business. No plans of that (yet or ever, haven’t decided yet), but for me to best serve an extra group, I would love to make it a win-win for everyone by offering two groups this round.

One group will be very basic.  The second group will be like the previous groups I have hosted but I am asking that you make a donation to one of three organizations (see below) in order to join. It can be in any amount. Again, from personal experience, when you are invested, you are more committed.

My Progress

And for anyone who is interested in my progress this round, I decided to commit the whole month to decluttering one of the three clutter beasts in our home. The three places I’ve avoided all these years are our file cabinet, closets, and the garage. I am tackling the file cabinet one folder at a time. Here are my results for the first 2 weeks:

It may not seem like a lot because it’s just one folder or a few pieces of papers decluttered a day, but if you add it up, that’s 510 pieces of paper (and then some…I didn’t count anything that was stapled). That’s 510 things on my brain if I didn’t declutter at all. Small steps when taken consistently make a big difference in the end!

I’m even happier to report that the group members are making progress too. I have a file cabinet decluttering buddy and for that I am thankful. A few are working on desks. Others have helped someone else declutter and some have received help from someone else. Items are being passed on to bless others. Space is being made for the things we really love. Overwhelm and stress is lessening.

I hope you’ll join us on this adventure!

  1. Love this post, Joyce! What a great idea to get folks invested in their commitment within the group by investing in community here and in the world.
