In today’s Pinterest-perfect, Instagram-worthy world, it’s not hard to see why so many people are feeling less-than. It appears everyone else is doing amazing things and going to amazing places. They look like they’re doing okay. But that’s a snippet of their life. Even if that’s not the intention of most people who share on social media, that can be how it’s perceived and/or received by a person on the other side of the screen. We also walk around asking, “How are you?” but never really wanting to know how someone really is doing. (I have a strong dislike for that question if it is asked in passing…as in, we’re literally walking pass one another. Because there sure are days I don’t feel well but a one-second interaction won’t afford us time to dig into that question. Perhaps a “Good morning” or “Enjoy the weather” might be better. I digress.) With a blurred vision of reality, we play off the things that are bringing us down as small things or pushing aside issues we should really deal with so that others will think we’re okay. We don’t want to be a bother to anyone else.
Only an internal transformation will truly change external behavior. Every battle begins in our minds, not with our behavior. We can behave a certain way and remain unchanged. If we want to change how we act, we have to change how we think…Renewing our minds is a beautiful joint work beween our commitment to become more like Christ and the transofrming power of the Holy Spirit working in us.

Sheila shares in It’s Okay Not to be Okay her journey and the messy things of life that sometimes have us questioning all the things. She shares questions that arise when hard things happen. She shares Scripture that reminds us of God’s control, not our own, that will see us through the situations we are in. And through her words, she reminds us, “Our problem is that we view our lives through the window of our culture rather than the rock-solid promises of God’s Word. We live in a culture of perception…When we view our faith through that window, we’ve corrupted it…God is in control and He is for us.” I love reading real-life examples of how God is at work in and around us. Sheila ends each chapter with “One Step at a Time” for how to practically live out our faith and be okay with not being okay but also knowing that it is never too late to start again.
