Start With 5 Words

Prayer Warriors! They are some kind of amazing kind of people. I have some in my life and I am thankful for them! Oh so thankful for their faithfulness in praying, in following up with prayer requests, with automatically knowing when to pray…and the list continues. I have never considered myself one of these people. It’s not that I don’t want to talk to God or have prayer needs…He knows I have many of those! If you know me, you know I can be pretty wordy…mostly on paper or the screen though. My analytical self is usually more introspective, so when given the opportunity to pray, especially in a group or even in my head, I’m all tongue-tied or brain-tied. The words seem to flow with those aforementioned prayer warriors, but unless I have a chance to go back delete or scratch out a few words and edit and type and write new words, I don’t know what to say. And I know that God doesn’t care about the specific words but if it is in a group, I know the people don’t care too much about my ummms and uhhhs and pauses.

But I need God. If I close my eyes, the heartaches will only meet me again in the morning. So I pray the only five words I can muster: I love you, Jesus. Help. As quiet tears come down my face, something unexpected and sweet happens: I feel the presence of God in a powerful way.

Beauty in Brevity

Lisa shares in the book about feeling like she will never be a champion prayer warrior or be the kind of person who can influence heaven to get things done, I knew I found a kindred spirit. I always felt like I wasn’t spiritual enough or I wasn’t disciplined enough…I mean, have you heard of people who wake up when it is still dark out in the morning to pray for hours? Not minutes, but hours! Or are you one of those people? That is amazing!

But as we read the quote above, that night Lisa prayed those five words was a powerful experience for her and she connected with God. She mentions in the book how, if we look at how Jesus prayed, we see that God still hears us when we do so with a prayerful heart from a place of desire to talk to the one who created us. Even if our words aren’t eloquent, like a Daddy who just wants to sit with their child, He wants us to go to Him and be with Him.

Encouragement in Simple Words

Or perhaps, you can’t relate to my story. My experience of not knowing what to say to God has never been an issue for you. But perhaps, you are in a busy season of life. Someone is always needing you most of the 24 hours of every single day. You are awakened before you want to be and praying is not the first thing on your mind, except maybe for a quick arrow prayer up for more caffeine. While I know we can pray through the day or on a drive to run errands for the day, I know it can be easy to get stuck in a rut of praying mundane prayers. I find so much encouragement in having a place to start. Five words may be just the spark we need to help our brain connect with our heart.
